Neurodiversity- Affirming Therapy

Therapy for Neurodiverse People :)

You’ve always felt different

…but couldn’t put your finger on why. You tend to think of things differently. For so many years, you’ve felt as if something was wrong with you, feeling socially awkward, disconnected, and have had to mask all your differences to fit in and operate in neurotypical environments. It has taken a toll on you — you feel depressed, anxious, and exhausted — and can’t help but feel this growing feeling of shame inside you, wondering somehow if you are a failure. But lately you’ve discovered the words for what you’ve been experiencing — realizing that you are someone who is neurodiverse — that you may have ADHD, OCD, ASD, or experience learning differences — that your brain simply interacts differently than typical standards. This realization has been powerful — freeing. Because you’re starting to realize it means you are unique and good as you are.

At Hope + Wellness, we work with many neurodiverse people, women, teens, and young adults, to provide a safe, strengths-based space to help you figure out how to navigate this thing called life and your identity in the world. Therapy is a healthy way for you to take care of yourself and begin developing insights to thrive and live your best life even in the face of adversity, depression, anxiety, and stress. As a boy, I wasn’t very bright. I didn’t even know the time of day I was in school. I think I had dyslexia or some learning disability. I certainly didn’t fit in anywhere. The years passed, and a feeling of failure was always with me until, by accident, I came across this career, and look at what has happened! Of course, I don’t regret anything because, in the long run, look what I’ve accomplished.

No, autism is not a ‘gift’. For most, it is an endless fight against schools, workplaces, and bullies. But, under the right circumstances, given the right adjustments, it CAN be a superpower.
